For its 2019 research symposium, the CMR decided to celebrate Diversity in the areas of biological science, social science, the economy and environmental management.

This event took place at the North Campus Conference Centre on 13 November, and the CMR was pleased that the venue was filled to capacity from beginning to end. The Faculty of Engineering displayed drones used for marine research for guests to look at during comfort breaks, and a cheese-and-wine function followed the day's programme to conclude the CMR's events for 2019. This was the last CMR event that Professor Andrew Leitch attended as the Chair of the CMR's Advisory Board, and as the DVC: Research, Innovation and Internationalisation, before his retirement.

The 2019 symposium fell within the week that the CMR hosted a delegation from the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) at the University of Oldenburg in Germany. Ten researchers and two postgraduate students attended a workshop, with the symposium forming part of the proceedings. A professor from the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute from the University of California, Davis (USA) also visited the University during this time. The CMR was delighted to host these international colleagues for talks at the symposium.

A total of 18 speakers delivered presentations, of which four were international guests. This event consisted of four sessions:
Biological Banter
Guest speakers: Professor Helmut Hillebrand (University of Oldenburg) & Professor John Largier (University of
     Calidornia, Davis)
